Meet our team of caring and professional eye doctors who have served generations of Granada Hills families.
Dr. Carl Melnik is the founding doctor of optometry here at Granada Hills Optometry Center. He founded our practice in 1972. Dr. Melnik is a graduate of the Los Angeles College of Optometry. He has been an active member of the Granada Hills Community, serving as president on numerous boards such as the Granada Hills Chamber of Commerce, the Granada Hills Kiwanis, the Granada Hills Rotary Club. Dr. Melnik headed up the community improvement project of Veteran’s Park, the pride of Granada Hills. He has received many awards for his community service including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jaycees. Dr. Melnik has also served as the President of the San Fernando Valley Optometric Society Board as well as being a member of the California and American Optometric Societies.
Dr. Melnik is finally cutting his schedule back a bit to spend more time with his lovely wife, Donna, his boat and his mountain/lake home. Wave vigorously if you see him on the lake! Also, if you want to know anything about Granada Hills, ask Dr. Melnik because he has “been there and done that!”
Dr. Vicki Leung’s extensive training includes a Bachelor’s of Science in Genetics Resources from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Doctorate in Optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry, where she consistently received commendations for clinical excellence. She graduated with honors from the Gold Key International Service Organization.
She completed her internships at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Brunswick, Maine, The Houston Light House for the Blind, and the University Eye Clinic, in Houston. Dr. Leung’s research involved 2 areas: 1) the detection of infant color vision, and 2) the treatment of nystagmus. Her research involving nystagmus was presented at the American Academy of Optometry in 1990, and subsequently published in “Optometry and Vision Science”, the journal of the American Academy of Optometry.
Dr. Leung pursued a post-doctorate residency in binocular vision and pediatric optometry, at the Southern California College of Optometry, in Fullerton, CA. She taught in the pediatric and vision therapy departments at the Southern California College of Optometry for 4 years. Dr. Leung has obtained board certification in the treatment of ocular diseases. She also served as a senior and supervisory examiner for the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (the national board administers licensing examinations for over 40 states). Dr. Leung holds the highest level of licensing as allowed by the California State Board that includes the ability to treat glaucoma.
Married to Dr. Leser, they are continuing the tradition of a family practice that was built by Dr. Melnik. When she’s not seeing patients, Dr. Leung spends her free time travelling and serving the California State PTA at both the state and local levels.
Dr. Eric Leser is one of the practice owners who is making it possible for Dr. Melnik to cut back his schedule and enjoy life. Dr. Leser grew up in Granada Hills so being at Granada Hills Optometry Center is really “coming home” for him. He attended UCLA and CSUN as an undergraduate and completed his Doctorate in Optometry at the Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO). Dr. Leser graduated with honors and received the Bausch &Lomb Outstanding Contact Lens Clinician Award. He enjoys being able to fit patients in contact lenses who have been told they can’t wear them. He was never any good at listening to those who said “you can’t.”
Dr. Leser brings with him teaching experience having taught in the Contact Lens Department at SCCO. He also served as an Assistant Chief Examiner as well as a senior and supervisory examiner with the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO), the organization that administers licensure examinations for over 40 states. Dr. Leser’s wife is also an optometrist who practices here in Granada Hills on Mondays and spends the rest of her time in their Woodland Hills office. When he is not working, he likes to spend time travelling with Dr. Leung and goofing around with his 2 children. However, someday he may be working with them instead of goofing around with them as they have both said they have not ruled out the family business as a career choice.
Dr. Mak was born in Vancouver, Canada and moved to Simi Valley with his family before his 9th birthday. It was in Simi Valley that he was prescribed his first pair of glasses likely because of his voracious appetite for books and video games. He always looked forward to his eye exams growing up. Dr. Mak pursued an undergraduate education at the beautiful University of California, Santa Barbara. He earned a Biochemistry degree in 2011, graduating with Honors and Dean’s List distinction.
Dr. Mak completed his Doctor of Optometry degree from University of California Berkeley School of Optometry in 2017. He is skilled at glaucoma management and able to prescribe therapeutic pharmaceutical agents (TPA) to treat many ocular diseases. Dr. Mak’s training includes a rigorous apprenticeship program in large hospitals like VA Palo Alto and Kaiser Permanente Sacramento as well as in organizations such as Prevent Blindness Northern California. He especially loves helping children and young adults develop fantastic vision so they can achieve their dreams.
Like a good Canadian, Dr. Mak enjoys watching hockey and is learning to skate so he can one day play. On the weekends, he takes advantage of California’s glorious beaches and hiking destinations to catch a few rays. Dr. Mak also loves to invite his friends over for board game nights for some friendly competition.
Dr. Mak is a member of both the California Optometric Association (COA) and the American Optometric Association (AOA).
